Government and Politics

The head of the provincial government is the lieutenant-governor who is appointed to represent the Queen, and is seated in Fredericton (the capital city of New Brunswick).

Representing individual constituencies are the 55 members of New Brunswick's legislative assembly. They are elected for a maximum of a five-year term in a general election.

The party with the most elected members becomes the provincial government. Its leader is premier of the province. The current premier is Shawn Graham of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick. The leader of the official opposition is David Alward of the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick.
