Canada. |
More than 60 people attended the event. They were from Fredericton, Saint John, Moncton, and some members of the Filipino Community of Fredericton (FCF). FANB has successfully launched its second fundraiser in this Year End Party event. The fundraiser was held during the association's Year-End. The silent auction of the Christmas Latern (Parol) and Poinsettia raised about $400. Luisa Misa-Toyer, Mae Ghanem, Julie McDonald and Victoria Farkas, crafted the 13 parol. With the success of the two consecutive years Parol fundraiser event, it has encouraged the Board Members to sell the Filipino Christmas ornament on a regular basis as a fundraiser for the association. "We sold thirteen parols this year. We are excited to volunteer our services. We are planning to sell the ornaments through our website and in different craft events to raise more funds for the association" Misa-Toyer said. Aside from promoting its culture in the province, the association also aims to help newcomers get settled in the community. |

NB invites immigrants to be its future By JOSIE LIVINGSTONE New Brunswick is inviting immigrants to be the province’s future, offering them a quality life and a place where they can belong, be themselves and be better. http://www.beinthisplace.ca/index-e.asp ) |
The province has launched an aggressive strategy to attract more immigrants as it faces the challenge of a declining population. Its strategy is contained in a report called Be Our Future. http://www.gnb.ca/3100/Promos/PS/index-e.asp Population Growth Secretariat Minister Greg Byrne said that the strategy aims to reverse population decline and increase population by 6,000 by 2009 and 25,000 by 2015. He pointed out that this goal will help the province grow its population by 100,000 by 2026.
"The strategy contains other measures to assist immigrants, such as providing more support to multicultural associations, so they can help us assist newcomers to participate as soon and as fully as possible in our economy and society." Under the Provincial Nominee Program, applicants who meet the economic needs of New Brunswick will be nominated by the province for immigration. One of the benefits of the program is the quicker processing of the application for immigration to Canada. For details about the program, visit http://www.gnb.ca/immigration/index-e.asp The province’s population is ageing at a faster rate than ever before, according to the census data released in July 2007 by Statistics Canada. And for the first time in the province's history, the provincial median age is above 40 years old.
